Slaughterhouses and Alternatives to meat
The animals that are slaughtered for food make up the vast majority of animals suffering in the United States with numbers reaching approximately 10 billion land and sea animals being killed each year. The United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA) created the Humane Slaughter Act, which requires the animal to be made
unconscious before they are slaughtered. The USDA created this law but it is
very poorly enforced and repeatedly violated. The ninety-five percent of the animals that are slaughtered every year are excluded from this act are birds, sea animals, rabbits, and other animals. Animals are genetically altered to grow faster or to produce more milk or eggs than they naturally would. Many animals become crippled under their own weight and die just inches away from water and food. Kept in small cages or jam-packed sheds, often with so little space that they can't even turn around or lie down comfortably.
